Age-related macular degeneration (AMD)

What is Age-related Macular Degeneration (AMD)?
AMD breaks down the macula, which is the light-sensitive part of the retina responsible for the sharp, direct vision. As the cells in the macula break down, there is a loss of vision in the central field of vision, but the peripheral vision is left intact.

Forms of AMD
Dry AMD - 90% of those diagnosed with AMD have Dry AMD. Small deposits start to accumulate beneath the macula and gradually break down the light-sensing cells, causing distorted vision in one eye, and eventually the other. It is important to monitor Dry AMD closely, as it can progress to the more severe wet form.

Wet AMD - Wet AMD occurs when tiny abnormal blood vessels begin to grow behind the retina, often leaking blood and fluid that damage the macula, causing rapid and severe vision loss. It almost always occurs in people who already have Dry AMD, and usually results in legal blindness.

Symptoms of AMD
Declining vision noticed by the patient or during a routine eye exam may be the first indicator. If you experience any of the following symptoms, you should consult an eye care professional immediately:

  • Straight lines appear distorted
  • Central vision appears more distorted than the periphery
  • Dark, blurry areas or "white-out" appearing in the center of vision
  • Color perception changes or diminishes

Who is most likely to get AMD?

  • People over the age of 65
  • Women
  • Caucasians
  • Those with a family member with AMD
  • Smokers
  • Those with high blood pressure
  • Those with farsightedness
  • People who are obese

If you have a family history of AMD or any of the above risk factors, email or call our offices today at 416-590-0300 for more information.
